Spring 2014: Whimsy and Elegance are in the Air

Spring 2014: Whimsy and Elegance are in the Air

The change of season is always a good opportunity to welcome new trends. This spring, we see a dichotomy of products, largely skewing toward either a playful, fun side or an elegant, sophisticated one.

In makeup, many spring collections turn to fun pastel and bright shades. Cover Girl introduces its Pastelicious collection, which features new pops of powder blue, green, and pink for spring. In nail salons, manicure shades turn to ice blue and bursts of yellow. In lip balms, EOS offers a limited-edition two pack of its Strawberry Sorbet and Passion Fruit Smooth Sphere lip balms, touted as “the perfect springtime gift.” For a fresh, simple look, shimmery nudes are featured in foundations and powders from multiple brands including Bobbi Brown and Maybelline. MAC’s website features “Altogether Peachy,” an online palette of fresh peaches in creamy, gleaming fan-favorite formulas for the lips and face.

In fine fragrances, many sophisticated scents hit the scene. Perhaps the most notable launch of the season is Dolce & Gabbana’s Dolce, which features notes from a sweet species of white amaryllis and is packaged with an elegant floral cap. The always refined Jo Malone debuts Rain & Angelica cologne, which is said to mimic “glassy beads of dew, awakening a London park at dawn.” Carefree and flirty scents are also abound. Victoria’s Secret introduces Angels Only, a fruity, floral mix touted as being “So young, fresh, generation next” while Philosophy debuts Loveswept which “captures the excitement of being swept off your feet.”

In the home fragrance arena, we likewise see both whimsy and sophistication. On the playful side, Yankee Candle brings back a number of fan favorites, including its Peeps Marshmallow Chicks candles scented after the classic Easter treat. Yankee also debuts a scent called Bunny Cake. Mass brand Glade welcomes spring with a number of playful, limited-edition scents, including Lift Off, Splash Out, and Dig It. Mass marketers also continue to offer lively, consumer engaging sweepstakes. For example, Glade’s House of Blues Las Vegas contest supports the brand’s room sprays, which are packaged in bright, eye-catching graphics that help attract new customers and retain loyal ones. On a more sophisticated front, Bath & Body Works debuts its Provence-inspired body and home collection, with plug-in diffusers and candles offered in French Lavender, Lemon Verbena, and Provence Garden scents; meanwhile, Yankee adds a number of spring scents to its Pure Radiance lineup, including Deep Sea and Peach Mango.
