Plant-Based Color Steps Up at MCB Paris

Last week, we attended the MCB by Beauté Sélection trade show to get a glimpse of the newest innovations and product launches in the European professional hair care market. There, the trend toward natural, green, and vegan took the spotlight. This is no surprise, as our recently published Salon Hair Care Global Series study shows that natural professional hair care products are on the rise as consumers seek clean and sustainable products in addition to natural ingredients. This segment shows well above market average growth, increasing in Europe by an outstanding 7.2% in 2018.

One natural product trend that is gaining importance is vegetal coloring, and brands such as Marcapar, Chromalya, and Biohair made it their highlight at the show. There are many other brands, such as Gaïa, Végétalement Provence, and L’Oréal’s Botanéa, focusing on this new trend; however, the segment is still relatively small, as many perceive these products to be not as efficient as standard ones.

Among the notable new launches in truly natural products is a customizable care line from one of the long-standing brands in the plant-based hair coloring professional products segment, Marcapar. Its new care line, which is created on the spot when the hairstylist mixes various ingredients, is called Recette, which in French means “recipe.”

Recently, we observed that independent brands are playing a greater role in salon hair care market development. Many of them are young start-ups with double-digit growth well above market averages. Already established independent brands such as Kevin.Murphy, Davines, and Olaplex individually register sales well above $100 million globally. Our hot-off-the-press volume on professional hair care indie brands reveals the strategy of 30 of the most dynamic indie brands globally.

Furthermore, our annual Salon Hair Care Global Series report is now published, with the first half of 2019 data for select countries to be available this winter. This series features individual and in-depth market reports for more than 20 countries, including key ones in Europe such as France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
