Cosmoprof India Mumbai 2019

India: A Hot Spot for International Marketers

We were recently invited to present on the latest developments taking place in the professional beauty sector at the second edition of Cosmoprof India in Mumbai. It was an amazing experience to see how the event expanded from its premier edition in 2018—not only in terms of space and time but also in the form of exhibitors and attendees.

What caught our eye in particular was the wide presence of international exhibitors who gathered from 23 countries, according to organizers. Coming mostly from Europe and Asia, these marketers were looking to form alliances with Indian distributors and expand their global presence by entering the Indian beauty market. Among these are Eldan Cosmetics, Mediterranea Cosmetics, Italcosmetici, LookX International, Sifarma, and Yuya in Europe and Doosun Cosmetics, Beyond Cosmetics, Misocos, Natural Korea, and S.C. Artistry Company Limited in Asia.

Some of the international marketers to have entered the Indian market most recently include CosRx, Farmskin, and L’UGX through their distributors, Limese, Maccaron, and Nail Lounge, in 2019. One of the leading distributors of beauty brands in India—Streamline Services—utilizes the platform to launch four major brands: Gelish and Morgan Taylor in nail care, Bombini in personal care, and Toxx in hair care.

While the salon hair care market continues to be an important part of the professional beauty market in India, there was a lack of hair care exhibitors at the show. However, an important development came from Streamline Services, the distributors of Olaplex, which introduced the previously mentioned Toxx brand. Toxx offers cryotherapy for hair—the first of its kind in India.

In the nail care area, Colorbar had the most outstanding booth, having created an Oh-So Sinful room for its makeup portfolio, along with a beautiful display wall for its 1,001 nail color shades. Colorbar is one of the leading nail polish brands in India, offering nail polishes in the price range of INR 250-350 (USD 3.6-5.1). In 2018, as a part of its re-launch campaign, Colorbar redesigns its logo along with changing the packaging of its nail polish bottles and expanding its nail color range to 1,001 shades.

Another noteworthy observation at the event was the prevalence of brands offering facial sheet masks with major names, such as Mirabelle, Farmskin, CosRx, Adwin Korea, and Fau. In the past year, the Indian beauty market has seen an influx of a variety of international facial sheet mask brands, with local Indian brands such as Forest Essentials, Lotus Herbals, Kaya Skin and Inatur also jumping on the bandwagon with their own facial sheet masks offerings.

We cover the professional beauty sector through various market research reports covering key trends, market developments, new product launches, changes in competition, business opportunities, and more. Our Salon Hair Care Global Series report features an in-depth standalone study on the Indian market, while a quick view of this market is also available in the Professional Nail Care: Global Market Brief report.
