Simultaneously, the advances in turbine technology enabled gas-based combined cycle technology to post major gains in new baseload power generation. Decontrol of other utilities created opportunities for innovation in contracting and risk-management.
As oil and natural gas prices have risen to unprecedented levels in the 2000s, the power production paradigm has once again shifted. Fossil-fueled technologies, particularly those based on oil and gas, are experiencing increased competition. Advanced technologies, such as supercritical coal and IGCC, are making inroads in hot new markets, such as China, and the nuclear debate has been resurrected after two decades of dormancy. Relatively immature Renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, have blossomed as technological advances permit larger-scale developments to begin rivaling their fossil-fueled competitors.
