Detoxing can be good for your body and hair! Hair? Yes, if you think about it, your hair is exposed to a number of things that affect its health: air pollution, hard water, chlorine, styling products, and even your daily shampoo. So, what can be done to rid it of these harmful elements and restore its luster? One answer is by using a clarifying shampoo.

What is a clarifying shampoo? It is a “super” shampoo with the ability to deep clean and cut through all the build-up. The frequency of usage will vary based upon how you treat your hair. If you are a product junkie, use a lot of dry shampoo, or are exposed to water with chemicals then it might make sense to use clarifying shampoos once a week.  However, if you have color-treated or dry hair, using clarifying shampoo once a month may work best for you.

There are quite a few established brands as well as some newcomers to this segment of shampoos. According to Kline PRO U.S. 2017 Summary Report, sales of clarifying shampoos in salons were up nearly 14% in 2017 when compared to 2016. The top selling clarifying shampoos in the salon channel are JPMS Shampoo Two and JPMS Shampoo Three.

The focus on shampoos to detox hair extends beyond the salon. Data from Amalgam, Kline’s service that digitally tracks sales in over 15 major retailers, indicates that there was quite a bit of activity in this segment recently. In April 2018, seven of the top 150 daily rinse shampoos were for clarifying. While that may not seem like a lot, for a product that is only used once a week or so, as compared to daily, it is not insignificant. Only one of the items is viewed to be a salon brand: Christophe Robin’s Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt at #34. Others included Kinky-Curly Come Clean Moisturizing Shampoo (#25), Pharmaceutical Specialties Free & Clear Shampoo (#32), Neutrogena Anti-residue Shampoo (#84), and Suave Essentials Daily Clarifying Shampoo (#128). Since the beginning of the year, several clarifying shampoos have first appeared in the Amalgam tracking. Of these, there are four items that have continued to improve their ranking as of April:

As consumers continue to focus on their overall health and well-being, products that are designed for healthy hair may continue to ride that wave and become part of their on-going hair care regimen.

To help you uncover hot product segments, key trends, sales, rank shifts, and more, Kline has developed two revolutionary databases capturing transactional data in two very hard-to-track spaces: digital and salons. Amalgam: Beauty Digital Product Tracker ranks and scores beauty products in key categories such as hair care, makeup, and skin care, based on the continuous collection and blending of data from about 15 leading retailer websites. Kline PRO United States and United Kingdom provides up-to-date data on more than 15,000 professional hair care items and all salon services based on hard, transactional data collected from a panel of thousands of independent and chain salons, distributors, booth renters, and beauty suppliers.
